Toyota GR Yaris (G16E-GTS) Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning in Miyagi

We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning service on a customer's beautiful Toyota GR Yaris!
This high-performance hot hatch came in with approximately 74,300 kilometers on the odometer. Under the hood is Toyota’s pride: the G16E-GTS型, a 1,618cc in-line 3-cylinder intercooled turbo engine.
As you may know, this newly developed, compact, lightweight, and high-spec powerplant puts out an impressive 272 ps (200 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 37.7 kg・m (370 N・m) of torque between 3,000 and 4,600 rpm. It utilizes Toyota's advanced D-4ST (Direct & Port Fuel Injection System). The GR Yaris is already legendary for its dominance in the WRC (World Rally Championship) and the All Japan Rally Championship!
Event Update: This specific engine refresh service was performed at the 2026 GR Yaris Owners Meeting in Jibusaka Kogen Ski Resort in Miyagi. The owner chose this service as proactive maintenance to ensure the longevity and peak performance of their high-power engine.
The Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning Process
Before starting the injection, we conducted a thorough pre-check of the engine sound, vibration levels, and exhaust output. Once everything was verified, we began the hydrogen gas input.
We initiated the process at a safe flow rate of 100 L/h, carefully monitoring the engine's real-time condition. As the engine responded positively, we gradually increased the hydrogen volume to optimize the carbon removal process.

Here is a detailed, minute-by-minute breakdown of how the G16E-GTS engine responded to the hydrogen carbon cleaning treatment:
5 Minutes In: Placing a hand near the exhaust tailpipe, we noticed a slight hint of moisture beginning to form. While the exhaust pressure itself felt solid, there was a minor, irregular fluctuation in the exhaust flow. We gave the throttle a quick rev to check responsiveness—as the revs dropped back down, the RPM gauge needle showed a very slight, temporary flutter before settling. We proceeded carefully, keeping a close eye on these initial symptoms.
10 Minutes In: Water vapor visibly started drifting out of the exhaust tip—a clear sign that the hydrogen was binding with the carbon deposits and burning them off cleanly. We gradually adjusted the hydrogen flow rate based on the engine's real-time feedback.
25 Minutes In: A noticeable change occurred. The mechanical engine noise and cabin vibrations began to quiet down significantly. With the engine responding beautifully, we locked in the optimal hydrogen injection volume to maintain this sweet spot.
45 Minutes In: Checking the exhaust flow again, the minor fluctuation we noticed earlier was completely gone. The airflow felt remarkably smooth and consistent. We revved the engine once more to check the RPM gauge: the slight needle flutter upon returning to idle had completely disappeared. The idle was now rock-solid.
55 Minutes In: The moisture at the exhaust tip began to dry up, signaling that the heavy carbon breakdown phase was wrapping up. We made final micro-adjustments to the hydrogen delivery.
60 Minutes (Completion): At the 1-hour mark, the engine idle, sound, vibration, and exhaust flow were all perfectly stable and smooth. The engine felt completely refreshed, and the service was successfully completed!
