Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning Performed on Toyota Coaster (1HZ) in Toyama, Japan

We recently performed a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning service on a Toyota Coaster (1HZ diesel engine) for a customer in Toyama Prefecture.


  • Current Mileage: Approx. 41,020 km

  • Engine Specs: 1HZ / 4,163 cc Water-cooled In-line 6-cylinder SOHC 12-Valve Diesel Engine

  • Max Output: 130 PS (96 kW) / 3,800 rpm

  • Max Torque: 284 N·m (29.0 kg·m) / 2,200 rpm


Reason for Service:


As the vehicle's mileage continues to accumulate, this service was performed as an engine refresh to maintain smooth performance and longevity for this iconic commercial bus engine.


Simultaneous Diesel Fuel Line Treatment:


Since the non-DPF 1HZ engine does not require DPF cleaner, we recommended Moty's M656 Diesel Fuel Additive. Specifically formulated for diesel engines, M656 prevents fuel line and injector issues while optimizing combustion efficiency. We poured the Moty's M656 directly into the fuel tank prior to starting the treatment.


Service Procedure:


After completing initial inspection checks—including engine noise, physical vibration, and tailpipe exhaust pressure—we began injecting hydrogen gas into the intake.


We started at an initial flow rate of 100 L/h and gradually increased the hydrogen intake volume while carefully monitoring the engine's real-time condition.

In-Service Impressions & Observations ↓↓↓


To allow Moty's M656 to circulate thoroughly through the diesel fuel lines, we revved the accelerator a few times. At first, noticeable black smoke emitted from the exhaust.


  • 5 Minutes In: A slightly damp exhaust gas began emitting from the tailpipe. Checking the muffler outlet showed that while exhaust pressure was sufficient, there was a subtle wave (unsteadiness) in the exhaust flow. We proceeded with the service while fine-tuning the hydrogen volume to see if this flow unsteadiness would clear up.


  • 10 Minutes In: Visible water vapor started coming out of the exhaust tailpipe. We adjusted the hydrogen injection rate as we moved forward.


  • 25 Minutes In: Both engine operational noise and physical vibration visibly subsided. At this stage, we locked in the hydrogen injection flow rate.


  • 40 Minutes In: We revved the accelerator a few times to test engine response. Rechecking the tailpipe confirmed that the earlier flow unsteadiness had completely resolved into a smooth, steady exhaust output. The initial black smoke had also cleared up significantly. We then resumed fine-tuning the hydrogen rate.


  • 50 Minutes In: Checking the muffler again, the exhaust gas felt dry, confirming that clean and optimized combustion was taking place in the combustion chambers.


  • 65 Minutes In: After 65 minutes of controlled hydrogen treatment and continuous adjustments, we confirmed perfectly stable idling, reduced engine noise, and consistent exhaust output. The cleaning service was successfully completed!
