We are pleased to share our latest service update: a comprehensive Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning for a Subaru Sambar Van, brought to our shop by a customer here in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Current Odometer: Approx. 155,450 km
Engine Specs: The legendary Subaru EN07 model (658cc, liquid-cooled, inline-4, SOHC)
Max Output: 48 ps (35 kW) / 6,400 rpm
Max Torque: 5.9 kg·m (58 N·m) / 3,200 rpm
Though small in size, this machine powerfully hauls heavy loads without missing a beat. It truly deserves its famous nickname: "The Porsche of Japanese Farmers."
Given that the vehicle has cleared the 155,000 km mark, the owner requested this service to remove built-up carbon deposits, refresh the engine, and ensure long-term reliability for years to come.
1. Pre-Service Inspection & Fuel Line Cleaning
On the Subaru Sambar Van, the engine is accessed by removing the maintenance cover located at the rear of the cargo bed. After removing the cover, we first checked the air filter and the inside of the air cleaner case for dirt and debris.
To prevent future fuel system issues, we also performed a simultaneous fuel line service using FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER. We added the injector cleaner directly into the fuel tank to thoroughly clean everything from the fuel lines to the injector tips alongside the hydrogen treatment.
2. Initiating the Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning
Before introducing the gas, we conducted a rigorous preliminary check, monitoring the baseline engine sound, vibrations, idling stability, and exhaust gas condition. Once all preparations were complete, we began injecting the hydrogen gas.
We started the flow rate at 100 L/h, closely monitoring the engine's live response. As the cleaning progressed, we gradually increased the hydrogen volume to the optimal level for this specific EN07 engine.

Phase 1: Pre-Cleaning & Fuel System Priming
To ensure the FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER thoroughly circulated through the fuel lines, I opened the throttle a few times. At this stage, the accelerator pedal felt slightly heavy and sluggish.
Five minutes into the hydrogen carbon cleaning service, I held my hand over the exhaust pipe outlet and felt a slight amount of moisture. The exhaust pressure was somewhat weak, and the exhaust flow was pulsating unevenly. I continued the procedure to see how these symptoms would improve.
Phase 2: Adjusting Hydrogen Flow & Early Improvements
I carefully adjusted the hydrogen gas flow rate while closely monitoring the live condition of the Subaru EN07 engine.
10 mins in: Water vapor began to visibly exit the exhaust tip. This is a great sign that the hydrogen is successfully bonding with carbon deposits and turning them into moisture!
15 mins in: The engine vibration reduced significantly, and the idle sound started becoming much quieter.
At this point, I locked in the optimal hydrogen gas injection rate to maintain this highly effective cleaning state.
Phase 3: Drastic Improvements in Exhaust Flow and Throttle Response
35 mins in: When I checked the exhaust tailpipe again, the weak pressure and uneven pulsation observed at the beginning had completely disappeared. The exhaust gas was now flowing smoothly and consistently. I revved the engine a few times to check the exhaust pressure, confirming a much more stable and healthy flow. Furthermore, that initial heaviness in the accelerator pedal had improved remarkably.
I continued the treatment while making minor adjustments to the hydrogen delivery.
Phase 4: Final Verification and Completion
45 mins in: The overall engine noise and vibration levels dropped substantially, making the cabin noticeably quieter. Revving the engine once more confirmed responsive acceleration, clear exhaust output, and perfect idle stability.
50 mins in: After a final check, I verified that the engine idle, sound, vibration levels, and exhaust pressure were all rock-solid and stable.
With these excellent results, the hydrogen carbon cleaning process was successfully completed!
