We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning on a Toyota GR Yaris (G16E-GTS) for our customer in Saitama.
Vehicle Specifications & Condition
Current Mileage: Approx. 97,470 km
Engine: Toyota G16E-GTS (1,618cc Inline 3-cylinder IC Turbo)
Performance: Max Power 272ps (200kW) / Max Torque 37.7kg・m (370N・m)
The G16E-GTS is Toyota’s pride—a newly developed, compact, lightweight, and high-spec engine. It features the advanced D-4ST (Direct-injection 4-stroke gasoline engine Superior version with Turbo) system, which controls both direct and port fuel injection. As many enthusiasts know, the GR Yaris has become an icon through its dominance in the WRC and All Japan Rally Championship.
Service Background
This service was performed just one day before the "2026 GR Yaris Owners Meeting in Jibusaka Kogen Ski Resort." The owner opted for this Engine Refresh Service as a proactive measure for long-term maintenance and peak performance.
The Cleaning Process & Impressions
Before starting the injection, we conducted a thorough diagnostic check on engine noise, vibrations, and exhaust emissions.
Initial Phase: We began injecting hydrogen gas at a steady rate of 100ml/h.
Adjustment: While carefully monitoring the engine’s real-time response and stability, we gradually increased the hydrogen flow to ensure a deep and effective carbon removal.





[During Service: Real-Time Impressions]
5 Minutes in: Upon checking the exhaust at the tailpipe, a slight amount of moisture was detected. While the exhaust pressure was within normal range, there was a noticeable irregularity in the exhaust flow.
Idle Stability Check: I performed a quick throttle blip to monitor the tachometer. When the RPMs dropped from 3,000 rpm back to idle, I noticed a slight shudder/instability in the needle. We proceeded with the treatment, focusing on correcting these symptoms by fine-tuning the hydrogen flow rate.
10 Minutes in: Visible water vapor began to emerge from the exhaust, a clear sign that the carbon cleaning process was reacting effectively.
25 Minutes in: A significant change occurred: both engine noise and vibrations were noticeably reduced. We locked in the hydrogen injection volume at a fixed rate to maintain this optimal cleaning state.
45 Minutes in: The exhaust flow felt significantly smoother against the hand compared to the start of the session. I re-checked the idle response; the previous needle shudder at 3,000 rpm had vanished. The RPM drop is now fluid and stable.
50 Minutes in: The "waves" or irregularities in the exhaust flow have been completely resolved. The moisture at the tailpipe has begun to dry up, signaling the completion of the chemical reaction phase.
60 Minutes (Final Check): After 60 minutes of precision-controlled hydrogen injection, the idling, engine sound, vibrations, and exhaust flow are all perfectly stable. The engine refresh is now complete.
