We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning service for a customer’s Toyota GR Yaris at 72Factory in Ibaraki Prefecture!

The vehicle’s current mileage is approximately 56,800 kilometers.

This model features the Toyota M15A-FKS engine—a 1490cc in-line 3-cylinder DOHC 12-valve Dynamic Force Engine. It delivers a maximum output of 120 ps (88 kW) at 6,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 14.8 kg·m (145 N·m) between 4,800 and 5,200 rpm.

This particular car is the GR Yaris RS, a grade designed to offer the aggressive, wide-body styling of the GR Yaris in a more accessible and practical daily driver. The combination of the Direct Shift-CVT (10-speed simulated shift) and the M15A-FKS engine works beautifully together, creating a lightweight, agile, and highly comfortable driving experience.

We performed this service just the day before the owner attended the [2026 GR Yaris Owners Meeting in Jibusaka Kogen Ski Resort]!

The primary goal of this service was an engine refresh to ensure long-term reliability and maintain peak performance for years to come.

We started the process by introducing hydrogen gas at a baseline rate of 100 L/h. While carefully monitoring the engine's response and diagnostics, we gradually increased the hydrogen flow rate to maximize the decarbonization effect.

5 Minutes into the Service: Placing a hand near the exhaust tailpipe, I can already feel a slight hint of moisture. The exhaust pressure and flow look perfectly normal. I revved the engine briefly to check the idling stability and instrument cluster gauges—everything is operating smoothly. We will continue to adjust the hydrogen flow rate gradually while monitoring the engine's real-time response.

10 Minutes into the Service: Visible water vapor (steam) has started to exit the exhaust pipe. This is a great sign that the hydrogen is successfully bonding with the carbon deposits and burning off as water vapor.

25 Minutes into the Service: A noticeable change! The engine noise and vibrations have significantly decreased, running much quieter and smoother. At this point, we locked in the optimal hydrogen flow rate to maintain this consistent cleaning state.

During the process, I noticed there was surprisingly little reaction from burning carbon, indicating that this engine was already in exceptionally good condition. Curious, I asked the owner about the car’s history and found out that the engine had actually been completely swapped and replaced recently! That made perfect sense. I was highly impressed by how healthy the engine felt for a car with over 50,000 km, so I’m glad I asked!

45 Minutes into the Service: Checking the exhaust tailpipe again, the gas flow feels noticeably smoother and less restricted than when we started. I revved the engine once more to monitor the RPM response; the revs now drop back down to idle much more smoothly and cleanly than before the treatment. We will continue the service while fine-tuning the hydrogen levels.

50 Minutes into the Service: The moisture from the exhaust pipe is beginning to dry up, signaling that the deep carbon clean is reaching its final stages. We keep adjusting the hydrogen flow for the perfect finish.

60 Minutes into the Service: After a full hour of precise hydrogen carbon cleaning, the engine's idling status, exhaust flow, and overall noise/vibration levels have completely stabilized into an incredibly smooth rhythm.

With all parameters looking perfect, we successfully completed the service!
