We recently had the pleasure of performing a comprehensive Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning on a customer's Toyota GR Yaris in Saitama.
This particular GR Yaris has covered approximately 99,760 km. As it nears the 100,000 km milestone, the owner wanted to ensure the engine remains in peak condition for years to come.
The Powerhouse: Toyota’s G16E-GTS Engine
The heart of this machine is the legendary G16E-GTS—a 1,618cc inline 3-cylinder intercooled turbo engine.
Max Output: 272 ps (200 kW) / 6,500 rpm
Max Torque: 37.7 kg・m (370 N・m) / 3,000–4,600 rpm
This high-spec, lightweight engine is a masterpiece of Toyota’s engineering, featuring the D-4ST (Direct injection 4-stroke gasoline engine Superior version with Turbo) system, which controls both direct and port injection. The GR Yaris has already cemented its legacy with dominant performances in the WRC and All Japan Rally Championship.
Symptoms & Service Goals
The owner reported a few concerns prior to the service:
Unstable idling at times.
Increased engine noise (rougher sound than usual).
Given that this is a direct-injection engine, carbon buildup is a common concern. To provide a total refresh and prevent future fuel line issues, we performed a dual treatment: Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning combined with a high-performance FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER to treat everything from the lines to the injector tips.
The Procedure: Precision Cleaning
We performed this service during the "2026 GR Yaris Owners Meeting in Jibusaka Kogen Ski Resort."
Fuel System Prep: We added the FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER into the tank to tackle deposits within the fuel delivery system.
Pre-Service Diagnostics: Conducted a thorough check of engine noise, vibrations, and exhaust flow.
Hydrogen Injection: We began injecting hydrogen gas at a cautious rate of 100 ml/h. While monitoring the engine’s real-time response and stability, we gradually increased the flow to the optimal level for deep cleaning.

To ensure the FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER thoroughly circulated through the fuel lines, we performed a few controlled revs.
0–10 Minutes: Initial Observations
At the start, the RPM gauge showed slight instability; the needle flickered when returning to idle.
5 Minutes In: Holding a hand near the exhaust, we noticed slight moisture. The exhaust pressure felt somewhat weak and the flow had a slight "wave" or inconsistency. This might be due to the characteristics of the 4-exit exhaust system, so we monitored closely while gradually adjusting the Hydrogen gas flow rate.
10 Minutes In: Visible water vapor began to emerge from the tailpipes—a clear sign that the hydrogen was reacting with the carbon deposits.
25–45 Minutes: Noticeable Improvement
25 Minutes In: A significant turning point. Engine noise and vibrations began to diminish. We locked the hydrogen input at a specific volume to maintain this optimal cleaning state.
45 Minutes In: The weak exhaust pressure observed at the beginning had noticeably improved. The exhaust flow, which previously felt "wavy," became remarkably smooth and consistent.
Testing the Throttle Response
We opened the throttle again to check the RPM behavior. The needle flutter when returning to idle—which was present at the start—had disappeared. The needle now drops smoothly and accurately back to the idling position.
55–60 Minutes: Final Stabilization
55 Minutes In: The moisture at the exhaust tip began to dry up, indicating the bulk of the reaction was complete.
60 Minutes In: Final check confirmed that the idling, engine acoustics, vibration levels, and exhaust flow were all perfectly stabilized.
The procedure was completed successfully after 60 minutes of precision cleaning.
