Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning for Mazda6 Sedan (SKYACTIV-D SH-VPTR) in Ishikawa
We recently had the pleasure of performing a hydrogen gas carbon cleaning service on a customer's Mazda6 Sedan here in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The vehicle has currently clocked approximately 150,950 kilometers.
This model is powered by Mazda’s flagship SKYACTIV-D 2.2L (SH-VPTR) engine—a 2,188cc water-cooled in-line 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve diesel turbo engine. It boasts an impressive maximum output of 200 ps (147 kW) at 4,000 rpm and a massive peak torque of 45.9 kg·m (450 N·m) at 2,000 rpm. It is truly a prime example of Mazda's engineering pride.
The Purpose: DPF Longevity & Preventive Maintenance
The vehicle was brought into our shop for a routine inspection and maintenance. Given the high mileage, the owner requested a hydrogen gas carbon cleaning with the primary goal of extending the lifespan of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and preventing soot buildup.
The Service Process: Precision Hydrogen Injection
Before starting, we conducted a thorough pre-check of the vehicle's condition, inspecting the engine noise, vibrations, and exhaust emissions.
Once everything was cleared, we began the hydrogen gas injection process:
Initial Flow Rate: We started the injection conservatively at 100 L/h.
Gradual Adjustments: While closely monitoring the live feedback and behavior of the engine, we gradually increased the hydrogen flow rate to ensure optimal and safe cleaning.

5 Minutes into the Service: Placing a hand near the exhaust tailpipe, I can already feel a slight hint of moisture. While the exhaust pressure and flow seem normal overall, there is a subtle hesitation or intermittent break in the exhaust flow. I revved the engine to check the tachometer (RPM gauge)—as the needle dropped back down from 2,000 rpm, I noticed a slight flutter or instability in the needle's movement. We will proceed with the treatment to see if these specific symptoms improve.
Monitoring & Adjusting: We continuously monitor the engine's real-time condition while making fine adjustments to the hydrogen gas injection rate.
10 Minutes in: Visible water vapor (steam) begins to puff out from the exhaust tip. This is a clear sign that the hydrogen is successfully bonding with the carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber.
15 Minutes in: Actual water droplets start to form and accumulate around the exhaust exit.
20 Minutes in: A noticeable change occurs—the rough engine noise and idle vibrations have significantly quieted down. The engine is running much smoother now. At this stage, we lock in the hydrogen flow rate to maintain this optimal cleaning state.
45 Minutes in: Checking the exhaust tailpipe again, the intermittent hesitation felt at the beginning of the service has completely disappeared. The exhaust gas temperature has risen, indicating that the internal carbon soot is actively burning off.
Time for another rev test: The flutter in the tachometer needle when dropping down from 2,000 rpm is completely gone. The RPM gauge now returns to idle perfectly smooth and linearly. We continue the process with fine-tuned hydrogen adjustments.
50 Minutes in: The moisture at the exhaust tip is beginning to dry up, showing that the bulk of the internal cleaning is nearing completion.
60 Minutes in (Service Completed): After a full hour of treatment, we confirmed that the engine idle, sound, vibration, and exhaust flow have all stabilized beautifully. The hydrogen gas carbon cleaning is now successfully complete.

Since the vehicle was undergoing broader maintenance during this visit, we weren't able to get immediate driving feedback from the owner this time. However, we look forward to hearing their thoughts the next time they visit our shop!
Why High-Mileage SkyActiv-D Engines Need Carbon Cleaning
We receive a large number of inquiries and service requests specifically for Mazda’s SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engines. Most owners start worrying about their DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and fuel injectors once their vehicles cross the 70,000-kilometer mark.
Modern clean diesel engines are equipped with DPFs to meet strict emissions regulations. Furthermore, to improve fuel economy and optimize exhaust gas utilization, most recent models also feature EGR (Exhaust Gas Recircirculation) systems.
While these technologies are great for the environment, they inherently restrict exhaust efficiency. Over time, this restriction tends to increase the overall thermal and physical load on the engine.
Our Solution: Preventive Maintenance for Diesel Systems
To address and correct these issues, our shop offers Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning. This service effectively removes built-in carbon deposits from inside the combustion chambers. By restoring proper combustion and exhaust efficiency, we prevent heavy carbon soot from traveling downstream into sensitive components.
For owners who are particularly concerned about their fuel lines (including injectors), DPF, and EGR systems, we highly recommend our Multi-Cleaner Combo Service performed simultaneously.
⚠️ A Critical Warning for Diesel Owners: Once the DPF warning light turns on or starts flashing—meaning the DPF is already severely clogged—neither hydrogen gas cleaning nor multi-cleaners can fully restore it.
Replacing or repairing clogged DPFs, choked EGR valves, or failing injectors can result in incredibly expensive repair bills. We strongly urge you to prioritize preventive maintenance before you reach that breaking point. Proper upkeep keeps your car running smoothly and extends its lifespan.
Enjoy the True Benefits of Clean Diesel
Clean diesel vehicles are a joy to own—they offer excellent fuel economy, massive low-end torque for a fun driving experience, and lower fuel costs compared to gasoline, making them highly economical. With regular maintenance, you can enjoy these benefits for many years to book.
