We recently performed a hydrogen gas carbon cleaning service for a customer’s Hino Dutro Truck here in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The vehicle's current mileage is approximately 175,160 kilometers.
This truck is powered by the Hino N04C-UN engine—a 4,009cc common-rail, water-cooled, inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine. It delivers a maximum output of 100 kW (136 PS) at 2,500 rpm and a peak torque of 390 N·m (40.0 kgf·m) at 1,400 rpm.
The Issue: Excessive Black Smoke
The customer brought the truck in for a routine inspection and noted that excessive black smoke from the exhaust had become noticeable. To resolve the black smoke issue and ensure long-term engine maintenance, they requested our internal engine carbon cleaning service.
The Hydrogen Cleaning Process
After conducting pre-service checks on the engine sound, vibration, and exhaust emissions, we began the hydrogen gas injection process.
We started the injection at a baseline rate of 100 L/h, monitoring the engine's condition closely before gradually increasing the hydrogen volume to maximize cleaning efficiency.

[During-Service Impressions]
5 Minutes into the Service
Placing a hand near the exhaust pipe outlet, we felt a slight hint of moisture. While the exhaust pressure itself was normal, we noticed an inconsistent, slightly disrupted flow in the exhaust stream. We revved the engine once to check the tachometer. As the engine RPM dropped back down from 2,000 RPM, the needle showed a faint wobble. We proceeded with the cleaning process to see how these symptoms would improve.
10 Minutes into the Service
Water vapor began visibly discharging from the exhaust pipe outlet, indicating that the carbon buildup inside the engine was beginning to break down.
20 Minutes into the Service
We observed a noticeable reduction in both engine noise and vibration. The engine was already running much smoother. At this stage, we locked in the hydrogen injection rate to maintain this optimal cleaning state.
45 Minutes into the Service
Testing the exhaust outlet again, the initial disrupted airflow was completely gone, replaced by a smooth and steady stream. We revved the engine once more to monitor the idle gauge. The needle wobble previously seen when dropping down from 2,000 RPM had completely disappeared, and the RPM returned to idle flawlessly. We continued the service while fine-tuning the hydrogen injection levels.
50 Minutes into the Service
The moisture at the exhaust outlet began to dry up. We revved the engine a few times to check for emissions—the problematic black smoke was now virtually invisible.
65 Minutes into the Service
After adjusting the final hydrogen flow rates, we confirmed that the engine idle, sound, vibration, and exhaust flow had all completely stabilized. With the engine restored to optimal running condition, the hydrogen carbon cleaning service was successfully completed.

[Post-Service Feedback & Final Review]
Customer Feedback:
"I can fully confirm that the excessive black smoke issue I was worried about has been completely resolved. The exhaust is now perfectly clean!"
Why Clean Diesel Engines Need Regular Maintenance
Most modern clean diesel engines are equipped with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to comply with strict emissions regulations. Additionally, many recent models utilize an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
While these systems are great for the environment, they inherently restrict exhaust efficiency and put a heavier workload on the engine. When combustion and exhaust efficiency drop, carbon soot quickly builds up, leading to noticeable black smoke.
⚠️ Don't ignore the warning signs! Excessive soot puts a massive strain on your DPF. Waiting too long can lead to DPF failure, and a full DPF replacement can be incredibly expensive. Early intervention with hydrogen carbon cleaning is the best way to prevent high repair bills.
Keep Your Diesel Running Strong and Saving You Money
Clean diesel vehicles are fantastic—they offer excellent fuel economy, powerful torque that makes driving enjoyable, and lower fuel costs compared to gasoline, making them highly economical. With the right preventative maintenance, these engines will last for a very long time. Show your truck some love, and it will reward you with peak performance!
