We recently performed a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning service on a Toyota Dyna (1KD-FTV engine) at Mr. Tireman in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Current Mileage: Approx. 49,280 km
Engine Specs: 1KD-FTV / 3,000 cc Water-cooled In-line 4-cylinder DOHC Turbo Diesel (Electronically Controlled Common-Rail Direct Injection)
Max Output: 106 kW (144 PS) / 3,400 rpm
Max Torque: 300 Nm (30.6 kg·m) / 1,200 – 3,200 rpm
The 1KD-FTV is a fantastic engine that strikes a great balance between power and low-end torque, effortlessly hauling heavy cargo and commercial loads.
Why the Repeat Service?
Two years ago, we performed carbon cleaning on this same vehicle to address black exhaust smoke issues. As the client noticed black smoke gradually returning recently, they brought the vehicle back for a repeat engine refresh service.
Service Procedure:
After completing initial inspection checks—including engine noise, vibration, idle status, and tailpipe exhaust pressure—we began injecting hydrogen gas into the intake.
We started at an initial flow rate of 100 L/h and gradually increased the hydrogen intake volume while carefully monitoring the engine's real-time condition.
In-Service Impressions & Observations ↓↓↓
To assess the initial engine state, we revved the accelerator a few times. As expected from the pre-check, visible black exhaust smoke was present.
5 Minutes In: A slightly damp exhaust gas began emitting from the tailpipe. Upon checking the exhaust pressure by placing a hand near the muffler outlet, the pressure itself was fine, but we noticed a subtle intermittency/fluctuation in the flow. We continued the process while keeping a close eye on whether this symptom would clear up.
10 Minutes In: Faint water vapor started coming out of the muffler outlet. We made fine adjustments to the hydrogen flow rate as we proceeded.
20 Minutes In: Engine sound and physical vibration noticeably began to settle down. At this point, we locked in the hydrogen injection rate.
40 Minutes In: We revved the engine a few times to re-evaluate. The volume of black smoke had noticeably decreased compared to the start, though traces were still visible. Rechecking the muffler outlet showed that the earlier intermittency in the exhaust flow had resolved into a smooth, continuous stream.
50 Minutes In: Checking the muffler outlet again, the exhaust gas felt dry, indicating that clean and optimized combustion was taking place inside the combustion chambers. Revving the engine again confirmed that the black smoke was now far less noticeable!
65 Minutes In: After 65 minutes of controlled hydrogen treatment, we confirmed stable idling, reduced engine noise, and smooth exhaust output. The cleaning process was successfully completed!
