Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning Performed on Toyota Crown Royal Saloon (2L-TE) in Ishikawa

We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning service on a customer's Toyota Crown Royal Saloon here in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The vehicle currently has approximately 85,570 km on the odometer. Under the hood is the legendary 2L-TE engine—a 2,446 cc inline 4-cylinder OHC water-cooled turbo diesel engine.
Max Power: 97 ps (71 kW) @ 3,800 rpm
Max Torque: 22.5 kg·m (220.6 N·m) @ 2,400 rpm
Why the Engine Refresh?
The owner was concerned about black smoke emissions. Wanting to keep this classic running smoothly for years to come—and given the increasing mileage—they opted for a total engine refresh.
To ensure the fuel injectors were also thoroughly cleaned, we recommended adding Moty’s M656 Diesel Fuel Additive, which was applied simultaneously during the service.
The Cleaning Process
After performing pre-service checks on engine noise, vibration, and exhaust pressure from the tailpipe, we prepared the system to inject hydrogen gas.
Moty’s M656 additive was introduced directly into the fuel tank.
We initiated the hydrogen injection at a rate of 100 L/h.
While continuously monitoring the engine's condition, we gradually increased the hydrogen flow rate.

Here is our step-by-step progress during the 65-minute Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning process for the Toyota Crown (2L-TE Engine):
5 Minutes In:
A slightly damp exhaust output began to emerge. Checking the exhaust pressure by hand at the tailpipe revealed that the pressure was somewhat weak, with an inconsistent, sputtering exhaust flow. When revving the accelerator to check the tachometer, the needle visibly fluctuated/shook as it dropped back down from 2,500 rpm. Furthermore, heavy black smoke emissions were clearly visible.
Goal: Monitor if hydrogen cleaning will resolve these specific issues while gradually increasing the hydrogen injection rate.
10 Minutes In:
Water vapor (steam) started exiting the tailpipe—a strong indicator of the carbon cleaning reaction underway. Hydrogen gas injection rates were adjusted accordingly.
20 Minutes In:
Engine noise and idle vibrations began to smooth out and noticeably subside. After revving the engine a few times, black smoke was still prominent, so we set the hydrogen flow rate to a fixed level.
40 Minutes In:
Testing again with several throttle blips showed a clear improvement in tailpipe exhaust pressure compared to the initial state. The sputtering flow had diminished, and the black smoke was significantly lighter. From here, fine adjustments were made to the hydrogen supply.
50 Minutes In:
The exhaust gases turned drier, signaling cleaner and more efficient combustion. Upon revving the accelerator, the black smoke had settled so dramatically that it was barely visible unless pushed to very high RPMs. The exhaust flow became smooth and continuous.
65 Minutes In (Completion):
After final adjustments at the 65-minute mark, the engine reached a rock-solid idle with smooth engine sounds and consistent exhaust output.
Note on Black Smoke: Only a minor trace of smoke remained at high revs. As is typical after this treatment, we explained to the owner that remaining deposits will naturally clear out after a short period of regular driving. The customer reviewed the results with us and was fully satisfied.
