Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning Performed on Mazda CX-5 SKYACTIV-D (SH-VPTS) – Niigata

We recently performed a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning on a Mazda CX-5 SKYACTIV-D (SH-VPTS engine) for a customer from Niigata Prefecture.
Current Odometer: Approx. 175,760 km
Engine Specs: Mazda SKYACTIV-D SH-VPTS / 2,188 cc Water-cooled Inline 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve Turbo Diesel Engine
Max Output: 175 ps (129 kW) / 4,500 rpm
Max Torque: 42.8 kg·m (420 N·m) / 2,000 rpm
This model showcases Mazda’s flagship SKYACTIV diesel technology. Known for delivering exceptional low-end torque combined with the smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic SKYACTIV-DRIVE, it transfers power directly to the road while offering outstanding fuel efficiency.
As the vehicle’s mileage has reached over 170,000 km, the owner requested an engine refresh service for long-term preventive maintenance. The customer noted that they regularly use LIQUI MOLY DPF cleaner to maintain the diesel particulate filter.
Before starting the hydrogen injection process, we thoroughly inspected the engine sound, idle vibration, and exhaust emissions. We began injecting hydrogen gas at a base rate of 100 ml/h, monitoring the engine's condition closely before gradually increasing the volume.

5 Minutes into Service: Holding a hand near the tailpipe exit, a faint trace of moisture is felt. A check of the exhaust pressure and flow shows no issues with overall pressure, but a slight pulse/irregularity can be felt in the exhaust gas stream. Upon revving the engine to check the tachometer, subtle needle fluctuation/stutter is observed as the engine drops back down from 2,500 rpm. We proceed with the service, focusing on whether the hydrogen treatment will resolve these symptoms. The hydrogen injection volume is gradually adjusted while continuously monitoring engine conditions.
10 Minutes into Service: Water vapor (steam) begins to exit from the tailpipe, confirming the active decarbonization process.
20 Minutes into Service: Engine noise and idle vibration have noticeably decreased. We lock in the current hydrogen injection rate to maintain steady cleaning at this optimal state.
45 Minutes into Service: Checking the tailpipe again, the exhaust pulse felt at the start has completely smoothed out into a steady airflow. The exhaust temperature has risen, indicating active carbon combustion within the system. Revving the engine once more to check the tachometer reveals that the needle fluctuation during the drop from 2,500 rpm has been eliminated, resulting in a smooth return to idle. Fine-tuning of the hydrogen injection rate continues.
50 Minutes into Service: The moisture at the tailpipe exit is beginning to dry up.
60 Minutes into Service (Completion): After continuing flow adjustments, we confirmed at the 60-minute mark that the engine idle, running sound, vibration, and exhaust flow have all fully stabilized. The service was completed at this point.
