Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning on a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (4B11) in Toyama!

Customer's Car: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (4B11 Engine) Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning in Toyama Prefecture


We had the pleasure of performing a hydrogen gas carbon cleaning service on a stunning Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in Toyama Prefecture.


The vehicle’s current mileage is approximately 88,100 kilometers. Under the hood sits Mitsubishi’s legendary 4B11 engine—a 1,998cc inline 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve intercooled turbo engine. This powerplant delivers an impressive maximum output of 300 hp (221 kW) at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 43.0 kg·m (422 N·m) at 3,500 rpm. Looking into the engine bay, you can see it has been meticulously tuned, especially around the intake and exhaust systems.


This service was carried out at the 【2026 Oyamidokoro Hiiragi & Owara Circuit Event】. The main goal of this engine carbon cleaning was preventative maintenance to ensure the long-term health and performance of the engine.

Since the car is equipped with an aftermarket air cleaner that extends all the way to the front grille, we securely inserted the hydrogen injection hose through the front bumper opening.


We started the process at a flow rate of 100 L/h, continuously monitoring the engine's condition before gradually increasing the hydrogen volume.

5 Minutes into the Service: Placing a hand near the exhaust tailpipe reveals a slight hint of moisture. While the exhaust pressure is normal, there is a subtle irregularity or "stutter" in the exhaust flow. We briefly revved the engine to check the idle gauge and engine behavior. When dropping below the 3,000 rpm mark, the idle gauge fluctuated slightly. We will gradually adjust the hydrogen flow rate to monitor the engine's condition and see if these symptoms improve.


10 Minutes into the Service: Water vapor has begun to emit from the exhaust tailpipe.


20 Minutes into the Service: Both engine noise and vibrations have noticeably decreased. We have locked in the hydrogen injection rate at this optimal level to maintain the current cleaning efficiency.


40 Minutes into the Service: Checking the exhaust tailpipe again, the initial exhaust flow stutter has been completely resolved, resulting in a smooth, consistent exhaust stream. We revved the engine once more to inspect the idle behavior. The occasional needle fluctuation previously observed when dropping below 3,000 rpm has also cleared up. The needle now drops smoothly. We will continue the service while making fine adjustments to the hydrogen volume.


50 Minutes into the Service: The moisture at the exhaust tailpipe is beginning to dry up. We continue the process with precise adjustments to the hydrogen flow.


60 Minutes into the Service: After 60 minutes of fine-tuning the hydrogen injection, we confirmed that the engine idle, exhaust note, vibrations, and exhaust flow have all fully stabilized. The carbon cleaning process is now complete.

Unfortunately, we didn't have the opportunity to get the owner's immediate feedback after this session. We hope to catch up with them in the future to hear how the car performs on the road!


Carbon buildup negatively impacts engine condition and performance far more than most drivers realize. By removing accumulated carbon from the intake, pistons, and especially the exhaust valves—while also clearing out some of the soot inside the muffler—exhaust efficiency is significantly improved.


When exhaust efficiency increases, it creates a stronger scavenging effect to draw in more fresh air. This drastically boosts the engine's combustion efficiency, making it much easier to restore lost horsepower and torque. Refreshing your engine from the inside out is the best way to keep your beloved car running happily and at its peak.
