We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning service for a customer's Toyota HiAce here in Toyama Prefecture.
The vehicle's current mileage stands at an impressive 327,900 kilometers.
This HiAce is equipped with the 2KD-FTV engine—a 2,494 cc water-cooled inline 4-cylinder DOHC turbo diesel engine featuring an electronically controlled common-rail direct injection system. It delivers a maximum output of 80 kW (109 PS) at 3,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 260 Nm (26.5 kg·m) between 1,600 and 2,600 rpm.
The owner brought the vehicle to us because it was emitting noticeable black and white smoke. In fact, they had already been advised by another shop to replace the fuel injectors. To resolve this issue before committing to major mechanical repairs, we stepped in to perform our carbon cleaning treatment.
Since the 2KD engine does not have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), standard multi-cleaners designed for DPF maintenance wouldn’t provide the best results. Instead, we recommended Moty’s M656 Diesel Fuel Additive. The M656 is formulated specifically for diesel engines to prevent fuel line and injector issues, making it the perfect complementary treatment to run alongside our hydrogen gas engine cleaning.
To begin the service on the HiAce, we accessed the air filter case, which is located underneath the front bumper. Crawling under the vehicle, we thoroughly inspected the air filter and checked inside the case for any accumulated dirt.
Next, we poured the Moty’s M656 additive directly into the fuel tank.
After completing our preliminary inspections—which included checking the engine sound, vibration levels, and exhaust pressure from the tailpipe—we prepared the equipment to introduce the hydrogen gas.
During this pre-check phase, we carefully evaluated the smoke emissions. Even at idle, a small amount of black smoke was visible. When the accelerator was pressed, a heavy amount of black smoke poured out, mixed with a slight trace of white smoke. The uneven fuel injection was likely causing a poor combustion cycle, as evidenced by a distinct vehicle body shake triggered by rough engine vibrations.
We started the hydrogen gas injection at a conservative rate of 100 ml/h, monitoring the engine’s behavior closely as we gradually increased the flow rate.

To ensure Moty's M656 additive circulated quickly through the fuel system, we revved the engine a few times. At this point, both black and white smoke emissions were still clearly visible.
Five minutes into the treatment, the exhaust gas began to feel slightly damp. When we placed a hand near the tailpipe to check the exhaust pressure, we noticed it felt weak, with highly irregular pulsations in the gas flow. We proceeded with the service while keeping a close eye on whether these symptoms would improve.
We gradually increased the hydrogen gas flow rate, continuously monitoring the engine's response.
At the 10-minute mark, a faint trace of water vapor started emitting from the tailpipe—a sign that the hydrogen was beginning to bind with the carbon deposits. We fine-tuned the hydrogen flow rate and kept the process moving.
By the 20-minute mark, both engine noise and rough vibrations began to settle down. We revved the engine a few times to re-evaluate the smoke, but a considerable amount was still being emitted. At this stage, we locked in the hydrogen input volume.
At 45 minutes into the service, we tested the throttle response again. The black and white smoke emissions were finally showing gradual improvement; at a stable idle, they were almost invisible. Checking the tailpipe once more, the weak exhaust pressure observed at the beginning had significantly improved. The choppy, irregular pulsations in the exhaust flow were also much better, though still slightly present. From here, we made further adjustments to the hydrogen delivery.
At the 50-minute mark, the exhaust at the tailpipe felt drier, indicating that optimal combustion was successfully taking place within the cylinders. When revving the engine, the smoke had calmed down to just a slight trace, even under heavy acceleration. Furthermore, likely due to improved fuel injector spray patterns, the rough engine noise and vehicle body shake vanished, giving way to a smooth, quiet idle.
At the 60-minute mark, we gave the accelerator a few more revs to check the smoke one last time. Both the black and white smoke had completely disappeared.
By the 65-minute mark, after final adjustments to the hydrogen flow, we confirmed that the engine idle, sound, and exhaust flow had completely stabilized. With that, the Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning service was successfully completed.

The injector cleaner we used for this simultaneous treatment is Moty's M656, detailed below:
This premium additive drastically improves diesel engine combustion efficiency and effectively suppresses the generation of black smoke. By also minimizing the formation of PM (Particulate Matter), which is the leading cause of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) clogging, it helps significantly extend the lifespan of DPF systems.
Furthermore, it prevents and cleans out carbon buildup inside the combustion chambers. It is highly effective at inhibiting the accumulation of residues and deposits that typically form within the high-temperature, high-pressure environments of common-rail injection systems, pressure accumulators, and fuel injectors.
As a result, it keeps the entire combustion environment clean, delivering noticeable improvements in torque and fuel economy.

Please note that because this service was performed prior to the vehicle's scheduled mechanical maintenance, we were unable to conduct a comprehensive on-road test drive.
However, we invited the customer to personally inspect the results. They were able to confirm that the black and white smoke emissions had completely cleared. Furthermore, thanks to the improved fuel injector efficiency, the excessive engine vibrations and body shake were entirely resolved. The customer was highly satisfied with the visible and audible improvements in the engine's overall condition.
Carbon buildup affects engine performance far more than most people realize. By removing these stubborn deposits through our Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning process, you instantly improve combustion efficiency. This not only suppresses the generation of excess black smoke (soot and carbon particulates) but also leads to better fuel economy and a significant reduction in engine load.
You will notice a massive difference in how the vehicle drives, resulting in greatly improved drivability. Additionally, reducing the workload on your engine lowers the overall risk of unexpected mechanical failures.
While this specific job began as an urgent request to fix heavy black/white smoke and potential fuel injector issues, we are thrilled that every single symptom was successfully resolved without a costly teardown.
To keep your diesel engine running at its absolute best, we highly recommend scheduling regular Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning treatments.
