Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning for Toyota GR Yaris (G16E-GTS Engine) in Aichi

We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning service on a customer’s beautiful Toyota GR Yaris in Aichi, Japan!
🚗 Vehicle Specifications & Background
Current Odometer: Approx. 100,900 km
Engine: Toyota G16E-GTS (1,618cc Inline 3-Cylinder Intercooled Turbo)
Max Output: 272 ps (200 kW) @ 6,500 rpm
Max Torque: 37.7 kg·m (370 N·m) @ 3,000–4,600 rpm
The G16E-GTS is Toyota’s pride—a newly developed, compact, lightweight, and high-spec powerplant. It utilizes the advanced D-4ST (Direct & Port Fuel Injection System) to deliver incredible high-power performance. As many of you know, the GR Yaris is a motorsport icon, dominating events like the WRC and the All Japan Rally Championship!
🏔️ Event & Purpose: Engine Refreshment
This specific service was carried out at the "2026 GR Yaris Owners' Meeting in Jibusaka Kogen Ski Resort." As the vehicle has crossed the 100,000 km mark, the owner opted for this engine refresh to ensure long-term reliability, prevent carbon buildup, and maintain that signature high-performance output.
🔧 The Cleaning Process
Before diving in, we conducted a thorough pre-inspection, checking the engine sound, idling vibrations, and exhaust condition. Once preparation was complete, we began injecting the hydrogen gas.
We started at a cautious flow rate of 100 L/h, carefully monitoring the engine's real-time response before gradually increasing the hydrogen volume to maximize cleaning efficiency.

5 Minutes into the Service: Placing a hand near the exhaust tailpipe, we could already feel a slight hint of moisture. When checking the exhaust flow, the pressure felt slightly weak, and there was a subtle pulse (unevenness) in the flow. We gave the throttle a quick blip to check the rev drop. As the RPMs fell back to idle, we noticed a slight flutter/hesitation in the tachometer needle around the 3,000 RPM mark. We continued the adjustment process, keeping a close eye on whether this symptom would improve. We gradually fine-tuned the hydrogen gas flow rate while constantly monitoring the engine's behavior.
10 Minutes into the Service: Steam began to visibly escape from the exhaust tailpipe—a clear sign that the hydrogen was reacting with the carbon deposits inside the engine.
25 Minutes into the Service: A noticeable difference! Both engine noise and idling vibrations began to decrease significantly. Satisfied with the progress, we locked in the current hydrogen flow rate to maintain this optimal cleaning phase.
45 Minutes into the Service: Checking the exhaust tailpipe again, the initial weakness in exhaust pressure had completely vanished. The slightly pulsing exhaust flow had also transformed into a perfectly smooth, consistent stream. We revved the engine once more to check the tachometer response. This time, the needle dropped beautifully and smoothly, with absolutely none of the flutter around 3,000 RPM that we observed at the start. We continued the service while making final adjustments to the hydrogen input.
55 Minutes into the Service: The moisture coming from the exhaust began to dry up, indicating that the bulk of the internal carbon and byproduct cleaning was nearing completion. We performed final tweaks to the gas volume.
60 Minutes into the Service (Completion): After a full hour of treatment, we confirmed that the engine had achieved absolute stability. The idle was perfectly steady, engine noise and vibrations were dramatically reduced, and the exhaust flow was flawless. With everything performing better than ever, we successfully wrapped up the service!

Improved Throttle Response: "I drove home at my usual pace, which involved a lot of engine braking during the downhill mountain descent. I immediately noticed that the throttle response (the engine's pick-up) had become significantly sharper and more responsive."

Visible Cleaning Results in the Oil: "I actually changed the engine oil right before the service, then drove about 100 km to the event. After getting back home post-service, I changed the oil once again just to check. Surprisingly, the used oil came out quite dark! This visually proved the deep cleaning effects of the hydrogen treatment. I highly recommend doing a post-service oil change to anyone getting this done."

Carbon buildup negatively impacts engine condition and overall performance far more than most people realize. By removing stubborn carbon deposits from the intake, pistons, and especially the exhaust valves, we significantly improve the vehicle's exhaust efficiency.
When exhaust efficiency increases, it creates a stronger scavenging effect, drawing in more fresh air. This drastically improves the engine's combustion efficiency, which directly translates to increased horsepower, sharper torque delivery, and a much crisper engine feel.
Thank you so much for your valuable feedback regarding the engine oil as well! Unlike chemical additive-based carbon removal methods, hydrogen cleaning burns away carbon within the combustion chamber without generating thick smoke, meaning it typically doesn't degrade the engine oil significantly.
However, your case shows that depending on the vehicle's total mileage (crossing the 100k km mark) and the specific engine conditions during treatment, a notable amount of dislodged carbon can still make its way into the oil. This is an incredibly helpful insight, and we will definitely use this data to advise our future high-mileage customers!
