Introduction We recently had the pleasure of performing a Hydrogen Gas Carbon Cleaning service for a customer’s beautiful Subaru Impreza WRX STI (EJ20 model) here in Aichi Prefecture.
The vehicle's current mileage stands at approximately 117,300 kilometers.
Engine Specs of the Legendary EJ20 This iconic machine is powered by the legendary EJ20 engine—a 1,994cc Horizontal-Opposed (Boxer) 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve Twin-Scroll Turbo engine.
Maximum Output: 280 ps (206 kW) @ 6,000 rpm
Maximum Torque: 40.2 kg・m (394 N·m) @ 4,400 rpm
This specific model was developed alongside SWRT’s (Subaru World Rally Team) next-generation rally cars, fully inheriting the proven performance and know-how gained directly from competing in the WRC (World Rally Championship).
Why the Owner Chose Engine Carbon Cleaning The owner had previously reached out, expressing a strong desire to get this service done the next time we visited the Nagoya/Aichi area. This trip made it finally happen!
Since this is a precious, irreplaceable pride and joy, the owner wants to keep driving it for many years to come. With the mileage gradually climbing, they decided to invest in this professional engine refresh service to ensure long-term maintenance and peak performance.
Pre-Inspection & Setting Up the Hydrogen Flow Before starting, we thoroughly checked the engine sound, vibrations, and exhaust pressure from the muffler.
Upon inspecting the engine bay, we were genuinely amazed by how immaculate the condition was! Even for a boxer engine with over 117k km, the characteristic EJ20 vibration was remarkably low, and it revved incredibly smoothly. It was crystal clear that the owner had meticulously maintained every fine detail of this engine.
We started the carbon cleaning process with an initial hydrogen gas flow rate of 100 L/h. While continuously monitoring the engine's behavior and feedback, we gradually increased the hydrogen intake to optimize the cleaning efficiency.

5 Minutes into the Service: We noticed the exhaust gas starting to become slightly humid. When holding a hand near the muffler tip to check the exhaust pressure, the overall pressure felt solid, but there was a minor, subtle fluctuation (pulsation) in the exhaust flow. To monitor the gauge response, we gave the accelerator a light tap—the idle gauge moved properly without any immediate issues. We continued the process while keeping a close eye on whether this slight exhaust fluctuation would smooth out, gradually increasing the hydrogen gas intake.
10 Minutes into the Service: Water vapor (condensation) began to emit from the exhaust tip, a clear sign that the hydrogen was doing its job inside the combustion chambers. We carefully adjusted the hydrogen flow rate and proceeded with the cleaning.
20 Minutes into the Service: A noticeable change occurred—the boxer engine’s sound and characteristic vibrations began to quiet down, becoming noticeably smoother and quieter. At this point, we locked in the hydrogen intake volume.
40 Minutes into the Service: We revved the engine a few times to check the response. When testing the exhaust flow at the muffler tip again, the minor fluctuation we observed at the beginning was completely gone! The exhaust gas was now flowing out beautifully and smoothly. Furthermore, the idle gauge response became much sharper, dropping back down to idle speed with incredible smoothness. From here, we fine-tuned the hydrogen levels for the final stages.
50 Minutes into the Service: Checking the exhaust tip once more, the emitted gas now felt dry, indicating that efficient and clean combustion was taking place. Even the exhaust note had transformed into a crisper, healthier tone.
65 Minutes into the Service (Completion): After 65 minutes of continuous hydrogen carbon cleaning, we verified that the engine's idling status, exhaust flow, and engine sound had completely stabilized. With everything looking absolutely perfect, we concluded the service.
